Figuring out what I wanna be when I grow up.

October 2nd!

I was excited.  I was 6 years old, and in grade 1.  At the end of the school day, I ran all the way from the school to the crossing guard.  My dad was on his way to pick me up, but because I was so fast, I'd already made it nearly half-way home.  Mom wanted him to come pick me up.  She was afraid that in my excitement, I would forget to "look both ways."

When I got home, I was allowed to go into the small back bedroom, but I had to be very quiet.  I can picture that room--dim with a blind pulled part-way down, softly muting the sunlight, and the crib with the little baby girl sleeping on her stomach, little hands bunched into fists, all peaceful.

It was magical!  My new sister, just home from the hospital, sleeping in the crib!  I had to slap a hand over my mouth to stifle the huge gasp of excitement.

You're my sister and my best friend--one of the few people who makes me laugh till I actually pee my pants, and you kept me from going mental after Mom died.

Oh yeah--I made you a card.  Hope you lurv it

...love those chicken pox :)

  1. the age difference seems like a lot when you're kids, but it shrinks significantly after you're grown. aren't you so glad for your sister? me too.

I especially love the one where I'm in my leather jacket with my pants high on my waist. Ha! And why do we always have to do the giant open mouth HAHAHA for every picture? That drives Dad bananas!

    You're the greatest.

And I love you too Steph!!!

  18. Rosie, Steph? Me forget. Yeah! That chicken pox pic, complete with super greasy hair is the best--even if poor little nerd was super sick.

  19. Maria, I lived far enough away from my sister for 9 years (though not 3000 miles!), and now we live right across the street from each other. I feel very lucky.

  20. That is a great photo - you are so kind to your sis, Karen. Love it. Good thing she isn't in high school having you smear it all over the web!
Happy Birthday and Happy Little Sis day to you!

Only you could make such a laugh out of something so precious and priceless: love between sibs. You're a gift to all, K.

  21. Rosie was a bird that we found on my old front porch...poor thing was hurt...so we did what any kid would...we "saved her" (from what I am not sure..) Rosie lived in my club house. Aimee and Tammy got the chicken pox at the same time (along with everyone else in teh school, but the lucky few who already had them, like me) They wer both home all day AND got to play outside together, so they "took care" of Rosie while I was at school. Your family left on vacation when Aimee started to scab over (yuck) Tamys family also went away...and so did my family...no one there to take care of Rosie...so when we all got back...Rosie was dead. She is buried in my parents back yard. Ask Aimee to recount teh storey of how she found Rosie! Thats the storey of Rosie. RIP sweet bird. We didnt mean to kill you...we thought we were helping you.

  22. why thank you, Christina. I was very tempted to post her bday card on facebook, but then the moment escaped me :) So, not so virtuous here after all!

  23. Steph! I might have heard a bit of the bird story, but not that everyone went away and forgot about the bird! Ha! That's not the ending you all hoped for. Thanks for sharing that--it's interesting to know that Aim and Tammy had chicken pox at the same time, and you didn't.

  24. I didnt get them becasue I was lucky enough to have had them a year or 2 before. Aimee adn Tammy got them when some lovely kid passed it around to every kid in teh school...there was 20 of us left in the whole school for about a week. Those pox spread like wildfire! It was amazing. There were 3 days where about 8 kids from your class left. Mr. Saddler even started a chart on the bulletin board by the washrooms with all the kids names on it...the lastest victims....i believe it said!

  25. Wow Steph, I don't recall this at all. Now just think: most kids these days won't even know what that's like thanks to the new chicken pox vaccine. Don't know how I feel about another new vaccine, but oh well.
