  1. I think it's fate. How often does a trashy smut book from your youth show up again??? What would be weird is if it was the same book from your basement! You know what is weird? I think our husbands sound exactly the same!!!

    1. YES, THANK YOU. I thought it was super weird too, and then I started to have a MOMENT because I got all FLAKY and said my MOM put the book there. Then my sister told me to relax, and NOT have a moment in the thrift store. Hee hee.

      Husbands are so blasé.

  2. LOL about your house decorated like a comic book. If Dave decorated it would be pastels from the 80s with a rug folded in a fan on the wall and all the furniture on angles. UGH. And yes - it is weird in a good way :-)

    1. Michelle, you CRACKED ME UP with your visual picture of how Dave would decorate. That was so wonderful--even down to the rug folded in a fan.

  3. It's DEVINE INTERVENTION. PROVIDNECE. Did you not need some smutty reading material? ah huh....it was meant to be.

  4. Funny thing that hit me is that you sound just like I would have thought, just like you write. Yes I get that excited about things I find in Sally. There was a book that I read over 20 times in junior high that I just loved. I remember reading the Judy Blume books when we were young, Are You There God It's Me Margaret. I read all the time when I was in my teens. I always got into trouble for reading in class when I was supposed to be doing school work.

    1. See? I knew you'd appreciate my new love of thrift stores. All that digging for treasure!

I LOVED the Judy Blume books. I loved them so much I should do a post on them.

    2. yes! please do a post on them! Rich bought me Are You There God for my birthday a few years back, as I was always talking about it...that and freckle juice! Oh or how about her "grown up" book Summer Sisters??

    3. I loved Judy Bloom... I could not ask my mother a thing and she was a huge source of info.... loved her to death! Do it!

    4. ladies, I'm writing that down in my THINK PAD. Wait...where the eff is my think pad....okay, I just freaked out on The Man because he "tidies" things all the time and these things DISAPPEAR, and he never remembers that he touched them in the first place.

  5. Is it weird? Yes. Is your husband weird? No, not if he's a man. Sometimes it is really good to be married to one of them, other times, well . . . I dunno.

    1. YEAH JEANNE, THAT'S RIGHT! OH well, he'll learn one day if he sticks with me long enough ;)

  6. teehee! you read a smutty romance novel when you were a kid. i remember finding the book "sex is a parent affair" in my folks" bookcase when i was prepubescent and my brother and i used to sneak it out and read blurbs and look at the hilarious weiner and boobie pictures when my parents weren't around.
i don't think it's weird that you found it. i think it's fun that you found it. warm fuzzies.
but i've got to agree with the man about the second item. there needs to be a purpose for it to serve or an item intended to go into it. otherwise, why does it have a cavernous middle?!
if it was up to my husband, he'd have everything decorated in 70's oranges, greens, mustards & brown with those nasty, scratchy afghans and rag rugs. maybe an avocado colored fridge. gross.

    1. AN AVOCADO COLOURED FRIDGE!! That made me so happy! Ew...we all had our houses decorated like that for a while--who wants to return to it??? Well, maybe someone who can make it funk-dafied.

I thought it was weird, but in a good way. I mean, I'd just been thinking of that book within the past month!

Yeah, smutty books were a primo find!!!

    2. oh yeah, and I love that stupid ceramic fruit dish, so I'm ignoring the GAPING HOLE.

    3. If avacado green or harvest gold or orange shag rug, or wall tile mirrors start becoming hip, I will kill myself. How about mushroom dishes? or macramae plant hangers? or Acorn, fireplaces? one thing ikea brought back are those stupid moon lights.......%$#$#% I just threw mine out from this house....good ridance!

what about orange mosaic tiled looking wall paper? mixed with chocolate brown plaid cushions on that stupid wooden furniture? Oh, yes I could go on and on and on and on..............I HATE IT ALL

oH, and another thing??????????OWLS have made a comeback........it has sealed it consider me dead soon.

    4. i've seen the owls returning.
and we totally had a couple of those wood couches with the scratchy plaid fabric that managed to incorporate all of the nasty 70's colors. i can't understand what my husband sees in such yuck.

    5. Sherilin, you and Melissa are KILLING ME. I love it! Okay, I have to confess something: I like mushroom ceramic canisters. My Mom had a set of 3 on the kitchen counter as we were growing up, and she liked little mushroom ornaments, so they have a special place in my heart.

But yeah, I'm not too thrilled with 70's decor, but I actually think THE 80'S home was even worse!!! How about a room done in pink and forest green? Oh barfo. A lot of people I knew had a nice, "dusty rose" carpet, and some green furniture to go on top...and teal? When was teal ever good? Oh, and don't forget to get some nice brass shelves with that. Oh YECH. Add a nice wreath filled with dried flowers and a HUGE dusty rose bow and you'd be all set.

    6. Karen my mother must have loved the 70's so much it carried into the 80's. or they did not really start till the late 80's. I seem to remember all that crap in the early 90's and oh yes the burgundy with that hot hunter green..........gag me with a spoon. what will I think in 20 years of my white crap???? Now that it the question.

      Delete
    7. yeah, like gorgeous white could EVER look gross.

Hmm...maybe you're right! I always said that the 90's is almost as gross as the 80's, but nobody realised!

    1. hilarious, hilarious book Paula. Oh yes, I love a good find. Have you been to the thrift store in Beamsville on highway 8? You probably have....turn right on King from Ontario St. and what is it called...Missions for Bibles Thrift Store? Awesome good fun in there. My sister got a really nice carry-on suitcase for TWO FREAKING DOLLARS.
Love the sound of your new purse!

  8. Here. Let me bridge the divide between you and The Man. I found a mint condition (he'll love the comic book lingo) set of The Lord of the Rings trilogy at a thrift store. That story could turn both your cranks at once! lol

But...it's not really weird. What would be weird is if The Man burned the book and put the ashes into the recycling bin continuing to be used as a set behind you, only for it to show up again on your mantle. Then your bathroom. Then your fridge. Now THAT would be weird.

  9. It is weird, Matt! It is! It is! I still feel like it's weird! I think we have that trilogy somewhere around...

Your "weird" idea would actually be a little horror movie-esque, don't you think?

  12. we should do a thrift store crawl, beamsville has bibles for missions, grimsby benevolent fund, once upon a child and value village in stoney creek, sounds fun to me!

  13. That's it now, Karen, you do realise you will become a thrifting addict because YOU NEVER KNOW what treasure will turn up next. Smutty romance? Picture? Fruity kitschy receptacle of love? Yep, got them all, but more awaits, oh yes it does! In fact, try cosmically ordering your favourite items from the past, and lo, they shall appear. Weird? No, it's a beautiful confirmation that the universe loves a thrifter.
PS. Read out a mucky extract from that book next time please! xxxxxxxx

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh goody! Curtise wants an extract from the book!

Yeah, do you know why I'm now obsessed with the thrift store??? IT'S BECAUSE OF YOU AND SARAH (misfits vintage)!!! I couldn't stand all the fun-ness you girls display all the time! It was KILLING ME with covet.

I love how you said I should cosmically order my favourite items from the past and they appear! That is SO AWESOME. It's only making things worse.

  15. Thrift stores RULE... seriously. And yes, that was weird. But Karen, you failed to mention your EMOTIONS. Yes, that's right... you found the book and then... *drum roll*... you felt like crying! ha! I said it!

If my man decorated the house it would be messy with cheap knives and swords everywhere... and maybe a picture or two of an eagle merging into a wolf or something lame like that.

    wuv,
