There's a Reason This Blog Is Called "ANGST"

EXCELLENT timing by the way, nasty virus.  KUDOS

Yeah.

There's a reason you may have noticed I've been scarce this week; not responding to comments, not visiting your blogs, being generally M.I.A.

but, not the sexy kind of M.I.A. like this:

hey everyone!  LET'S DANCE!

Paper Planes by M.I.A. on Grooveshark

Wow!  That was FUN!

Oh wait, I don't feel any better.

Okay, so this is pretty much more stress than I can take.  Ella is covered in a rash, with a throat so sore when she eats or drinks anything, it feels like everything is "burning."  At first I thought she just had a bad cold, that was making her eczema worse.

And then the rash got really bad!

YOU'RE GONNA NEED AN OCEAN OF CALAMINE LOTION...
Please.  Please can someone get that song out of my head?
It's been stuck in there for DAYS and I can't take it anymore!!!

So, off to the doctor she went, and he thinks she has "hand, foot and mouth disease."   I pretty much agree that that's what it must be.  So, it's a nasty virus that has to run its course.

Big deal, right?  Kids get viruses. Sure, they gets lots of viruses and nasty little yucks because they put their PEE PEE KA KA HANDS ON EVERY THING and they SHUN SOAP.  AND THEN THEY PUT THEIR FECAL COLIFORM HANDS IN THEIR LITTLE YAPS AND THEY SLURP THOSE GERMS UP.

Fine, fine.  We know all about this as parents.  Only, there's a couple of problems. First, today is the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL.  Ella is missing it.  She also missed yesterday.  And I'm so exhausted that I did not make it out to get the teachers any little token of my appreciation.

Oh, and see this dress?

crappy quality photos courtesy of my crappy, but adorable pink cell phone

THIS is Ella's FLOWER GIRL DRESS.  We have a family wedding to go to on Sunday.

S   U   N   D   A   Y

It's an hour out of town.  Ella's dress is gorgeous.  Jack has a little rental tuxedo.  The Man is THE BEST MAN.  I have a really cute little black dress and...and..

SPARKLY SHOES, PEOPLE.  I HAVE SPARKLY SHOES.  I have shoes so good that I can't wait to unveil them to you.  And, I have a lot of BLING to wear!

Wait...

Not that much bling...but I have a lot of bling.

So, we never get to go anywhere and do couple-y things.  Hell, we have CHILDREN, THAT'S THE WAY IT BE'S.  I don't know when will be the next time I get to work my SEXY DISCO look.  My dad had even planned to drive up to Suburban Hell, pick up the kids, and bring them back home so The Man and I could actually enjoy the reception.

All kinds of fun relatives from England are here!  They were coming over tonight for a party.  Right now I have TWO pots of Italian sausage, meatballs and sauce waiting to be poured into bags to go into the FREEZER, because our house is filled with THE PLAGUE and nobody's coming now.

Okay, that's enough talk. We'll see what happens I guess.  Right now I think I'll go have some Doritos and that last MAGIC PILL for breakfast.

  1. I cannot describe how much I feel for you. I just have the one daughter but I know how stressful it is when she's ill and this sounds like such a nasty virus, I've never even heard of it before. These things always seem to come at the worst times but I agree this timing is taking the p**s! I'm so sorry its worked out the way it has. I hope sharing it has relieved the anxiety even a little. It's a tale for her wedding day at least! xx

    1. Thanks Lucy, you're very kind. This virus definitely wasn't on my radar!!! I only keep a lookout for colds, flu and stomach bugs! The great kick in the pants though is the timing. Of course it's the timing.

  2. maybe she'll be miraculously well by sunday... maybe? otherwise, you'll have to fabricate another event for wearing your dress and shoes and bling.
i hope she feels better super fast and no one else gets it!

    1. She might be Sherilinnie. Her rash looks less FURIOUS today, and like it's starting to dry up.

Honestly...this crap happens too often. When I was going to a water park back a few months ago, and there were mere DAYS before we left, both kids were hurling.

  3. SHIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTT! There. I said it for you. What a yucky virus! Yuck, yuck, yuck. Why are children such gross, disease ridden little people? What's the matter with just a cold??? Fingers, toes and legs crossed. Get better, Ella Girl! (It's gotta hurt. Poor lamb. Boo.)

    1. Thanks Steph, that's actually very helpful to know! The doctor at the clinic said it's "going around." I wonder how many other kids in the kindergarten class got wiped out by it???

    1. I'm guessing you discovered the M.I.A. song, and not "poison ivy," right, nerdo? Lurved the pride reference.

  7. Firstly, that MIA song is THE BEST CAR DANCING SONG EVER - I have very complicated head/ear/shoulder choreography for that song.

Secondly, OH NO!!! Is there any chance that she'll be better by the wedding? Can the granddad just stay home with her so you guys don't have to miss the fun?

Take the pill! Take the pill! Then blog while under its influence... maximum amusement for us!

Keep us posted - hope Ella is better soon.

    1. that stupid pill, Sarah. It's like magical salvation, and I can't take it because then I'll have NOTHING!!!

I would love to see that complicated choreography. Ella's all better now--but looks horrendous. It was Jack we had to worry about!

  8. You know, every time I read your blog, I walk away feeling better about myself. So, um, thanks!
Seriously though, sorry about all that. To me, the worst part is that she may miss dressing up in that beautiful dress. If so, you should totally crash someone else's wedding.
    Take care.

  9. Nooooo! I never had that one, it sounds hideous, some woman I worked with made her kids stay AT SCHOOL with it, even though it's really infectious, because they didn't seem that bad. mmmmm sausage pasta sauce....
Hope a miraculous recovery happens for Sunday!!

  10. Poor Ella, poor Karen.
My kids haven't had HF&M but I know other kids who have, although Ella sounds as though she has a particularly nasty version. Kids' sickness is ALWAYS timed for maximum inconvenience, in my experience. I hope hope hope she feels a little better soon, is there the slightest teeniest weeniest possibility she'll be OK-ish for Sunday? Obviously I want her to feel better. But I REALLY want you and the Man to get your dirty dancing on at the reception. And I REALLY REALLY want pics of your posh frock, Cinderella shoes, and bling.
PS. LOVE Ella's art, meant to comment before but didn't, so saying it now! You have talented children, Karen, you're doing something right, love! xxxxxxx

    1. Curtise, I'm comforted knowing that you agree about the timing of kids' illnesses, because that means you've lived through your share of sucky times too!

Yes, I will take pics of my dress!

  11. Our kids had hand foot and mouth and I was grossed out. It was disgusting. They were cranky and I just wanted to hole up in the bathroom with a bottle of booze till it was all over. It lasted for over a week for each kid. That just gave me post traumatic stress just thinking about it. Woman, I feel for you on this. Totally feel for you.

And now I have to get back to the minions and play cruise director.

    1. yes Lizbeth, YES! The CRANKINESS nearly killed me, even though it was totally justified. Poor Ella! Her legs were a mess!

  12. Oh my gosh!! I have no idea what hand foot mouth disease is, but it sounds absolutely awful.

I hope someone waves a magic wand over your house and removes the funk before Sunday.

  13. You have my sympathy!! Adam had HFM at age 4. Then he got it again a few months later. :O I did my best mom protest - stamping my feet and claiming "but you're not supposed to be able to get it again" and the doctor just smiled and said "different strain". It was hell.

    1. DIFFERENT STRAIN?!? What a coxsackie idiot. Lisa, I was hoping to hear from you on this, because for some reason I feel like you mentioned it before, or I figured since you have young boys, you'd have at least been through some other like hell as well.
